Visitor's Book comments for this apartment

Wonderful stay in No9 – we love the view and the apartment is lovely and comfortable. Dinner in the Ship Rye was delicious and good atmosphere – hot chocolate in Knoops and a drink in the Mermaid.

We walked to Rye Harbour, Camber Sands, Winchelsea Beach and back via Camber Castle – 20km walk but very beautiful and flat – would recommend if you fancy a long walk. Will definitely be back Chris, thank you.

If only we could stay longer!

Visit number seven! We have been coming to the Boathouse for a long time now and it has never let us down. We have been able to sit outside in the sun a couple of times and it is such a special place to be. Our new find this time is the Standard Inn in the Mint – just fabulous. I know it won’t be long before we are back. Thanks Chris, once again – our very best wishes.

Judith & Clive               Buckfast, Devon                                  2.4.16 – 9.4.16

What a fabulous week. Loved watching the birds and the tide rising & falling. Ate at the Standard Inn, Simply Italian & anniversary dinner at Webbe’s which was fabulous. Visited Dungeness and took steam train across to New Romney. Visited Rye Harbour Natured Reserve which was great. Had tea in the garden of Lamb House and toured the Ypres Castle Museum – well worth a visit.

Thank you. We’ll be back.

Lynne & Dominic                        Bournemouth                                       8/5 – 13/5/16

Lovely stay at the Boathouse & Rye, what a great place, plenty to do, lots of walks, a visit to Hastings, the new pier and old town.

What a find in the ‘Globe Inn’ tucked away, food great & atmosphere!! Italian good as was the Ypres Castle and the tea rooms, too many cakes!!!

Pam & Allan                             North Yorks                                       15/5 – 21/5

Really enjoyed our 4 days here – walked to Winchelsea and back; visited Camber Sands & saw 3 seals riding the outgoing tide at the river mouth! Went to Dungeness reserve & rode the steam railway. Had lovely food at Marino's chippy, The Ambrette (Clare’s birthday), The Mermaid Inn & The Globe Inn (yummy fresh fish). Thanks for the bubbly J

Andy & Clare Thompson                                                                    28/5 – 1/6

We came for peace and quiet and found it!

Enjoyed the relaxed setting and bird calls – explored Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, the Winchelsea walk and camber Sands. Visited the gardens of great Dixter superb (met a Swedish film crew filming Sweden’s version of Gardeners’ World – no murder scene this time!!) Plan to go to Sissinghurst today.

Chris you are a great host – thank you!

Graham & Jayne Harris                                                                 16/6 – 19/6

Our first stay in Rye, and what a great place it is!

Loads to see and do. Did 3 of the walks round the countryside of Rye – leaflets in the folder. Also visited Brighton. 2 trips to cinema when the weather was a bit ropey. Places we ate which we would recommend – Union Steakhouse, Globe Inn and the Mermaid. Thanks for the fizz, had a night in with food from Rye Deli. Final evening meal in the Shipp Inn v. good.

Maureen & Keith Fowler             Edinburgh                                             25/6 – 2/7/16

Best location in Rye to stay, spent most evenings on balcony with glass of wine, watching the changing tides and birdlife, best part of day early morning with cup of tea with plenty of birds to see.

Ate at Simply Italian, reasonably priced, friendly and very convenient.

The Standard pub, good fish & chips.

Carey’s (Fish Restaurant) good fish.

Edith’s House, wonderful selection of scones, very homely feel.

Knopps – amazing range of chocolate drinks up to 90% in strength.

Fletchers Tea House in courtyard, nice setting.

Rye Deli’s good for tasty bites to bring back to room.

Tourist information very helpful and informative.

Good walk to Camber Castle, to Bird Hide at Castle Waters, plenty of cormorants & lapwings then on to view point to see Marsh Harriers.

Good network of buses from Rye Railway Station, No313 to Rye Harbour Bird Sanctuary.

No100 to Winchelsea Village.

No101 to Winchelsea Beach

Would like to thank Chris for the surprise bottle of bubbly on arrival and on the high standard of accommodation.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, and would hope to return again on the not too distant future.

Jan & Steve Jeffs                 Bristol                                                 9/7 – 16/7

We enjoyed a terrific stay at the Boathouse and exploring the surrounding area and Rye. Chris couldn’t have been more helpful and the accommodation was ideal for our purposes. Very comfortable, well equipped, great location.

We hired bikes from Rye Hire and took the circular scenic route along the beach to Winchelsea before heading back to Rye on the National Cycle Route, and then off to Camber which is a safe and well designed route. Would strongly recommend this as a way to get around.

The Ship Inn we visited on the Friday night for dinner – very friendly, welcoming and tasty.

For Saturday, we had the full English at the Grain Café – very full and very English. In the evening, we went to the Mermaid Inn – excellent quality and a interesting pub for its history and background. Off to the miniature railway today!

Thanks Chris for a memorable stay – brilliant!

Jeremy & Cath                         Harpenden                                           29-31st July

It was a relaxing stay. Saw a shooting star on our first night. Looking forward to another good night’s sleep.

Thanks Chris!

Shahrear & Arsheen                        London                                     25th Aug – 26th Aug 2016

We have had a great stay at The Boathouse. A very comfortable base. Rye is a gem, we loved all the history attached to the area and genuinely old houses!

We visited Battle Abbey and the 1066 site which was a great day out – the tour of Battle is lovely to explore. Camber Sands is a lovely place for a stroll. We would recommend “Simply Italian” on the quay and Ypres Castle Inn pub for meals. The Rye Deli in the High Street provides some lovely treats – savoury and sweet! And if you like history a visit to “The Mermaid Inn” is a must. Thank you Chris for your welcome pack, it is much appreciated and the bubbly was very kind.

An excellent find, I am sure we will return.

Kim & John Birt 28/10-1/11/14

A lovely apartment and great location as a base to explore the lovely picturesque town of Rye, and also very comfortable just to chill out for a couple of days. Will definitely recommend to friends & family. Thanks.

My eating tip would be – definitely have dinner at the Mermaid Inn. It’s pricey but you’ll never find anywhere else like it – not to be missed!

Ross & Rob, Southfields, London SW 31 March – 2 April 2015

We have really enjoyed our 3 day break.

Loved Rye - & our walk to Winchelsea.

Also popped by Dungeness – nice eats at Carey’s, Ypres Castle Inn & tonight maybe Simply Italian.

Cheers for the bubbly – had it with fish from Rye Deli. All the best!

PS. Loved the apartment – added some seashells to the collection .. J

Liz Reynolds, West Sussex April 8th 2015

We found Sussex and Kent countryside quite magical. Loved the peaceful Boathouse.

Rye was great to explore and had many interesting places to eat.

Webbe’s – very good food and friendly service.

Hazel & Alasdair, Cambridge

A great place for our first stay in Rye, which we very much like. Thanks for the quality fizz. Everywhere we ate was at least ‘Good’. Simply Italian superb the first time, good the second, Lemon Grass also Good, Webbe’s was excellent.

Our last supper was at the Mermaid Inn Hotel. Certainly was pricey but quality – even if the portions were a bit small. We also had great journeys out including the area around Dungeness – stark but well worth it. Rye Harbour Nature Reserve – well laid out and very interesting. Also a visit to Camber Sands. Use the central car park – it’s right by the beach – which was excellent for a walk.

Another pleasant surprise was the empty but excellent swimming pool and gym near the station.

Katherine & Richard Shock, Oxford 20-27 June 2015

I’ve spent 7 days in No15, 3 days in No9 (prefer no15), immediately felt comfortable in both! Rye’s a perfect place to stay and explore the surroundings, even if you don’t drive – the bus schedule has become my ‘bible’! Chris’s a marvellous host, easy to get in contact, accurate and supportive response. Nice ‘extras’ for me x 2! J. My top 5 : beautiful Winchelsea, so tranquil & with its friendly pub ‘The New Inn’; Sunday lunch at the ‘Hope and Anchor’ decently priced, nice view; good healthy walks Rye Harbour & Winchelsea; Big & super fish & chips in Hastings; Antique shops too!

Lena Bjorklund, Stockholm 21-27/7-15

Wow! Could stay here forever! It really grows on you. Slept like logs in the comfy bed. Watching the birds (we’re not birders so can only name the ducks, gulls and a solitary cormorant whose antics as he tried & failed to keep hold of  slithery eel, kept us enthralled), the tides going up & down and sitting on the balcony in the sun means we’ll go home rejuvenated. No ostriches! But one boat went by! Thanks too for the bubbly x.

(our 1st time but we’ll be back)

Lou and Andy Spiers,                  Egham                                      5,6,7 May 2014

This was our first trip to Rye and we are pleasantly surprised to discover how much there is to do; nature reserve at Rye Harbour, ancient churches, Winchelsea & New Inn, Derek Jarman’s cottage & garden at Dungeness & the acoustic “ears”. Great Dixter was lovely. Food – lots of great places – Mermaid Café, SI, the Ship. Rye Deli etc. Loved staying at the Boathouse! The thoughtful details & bubbly made all the difference.

Hans & Ghyslaine Gray,            Vancouver B.C. Canada            17.5.14 – 24.5.14

Although we had been to Rye before, staying at the Boathouse gave a very new perspective on the town – only a short walk to the shops, restaurants and pubs and yet very peaceful with lovely open views over the river and meadows beyond. Good to have a parking spot also as there are otherwise at a premium in Rye. Were fortunate to have great weather and spent relaxing days in the dunes at Camber and then taking atmospheric photos down at Dungeness. Thanks you for the bubbly.

Rob & Julie,                       Bromley, Kent                                28/6/14 – 1/7/14

I came here to relax and I certainly did that. Slept well, ate well and explored the lovely town. I walked everywhere – so certainly healthy too. Explored the local towns and visited Charleston near Lewes. When I lived in UK, was brought up in Kent so this was my stomping ground. Rye hasn’t changed, thank goodness! Thank you Chris for the bubbly and all.

Stevie Martin,                   conil de la Frontera, Cadiz, Spain              12 July

After a hectic week in France with children & five grandchildren, it was good to relax in this lovely setting. Quiet, peaceful & everything to hand. We mostly walked, read & ate! Rye compared to Taunton is completely unspoilt & thank heavens the authorities have used some foresight & kept it so. The changing tides have added a new dimension to the landscape & we leave refreshed. Thanks too Chris for the fizz. It just hit the spot.

Marlene & Bill Ewens,                  Taunton, Somerset                        27/8/14

Comfortable base from which we explored Rye & surrounding area. Visited Sissinghurst, Bodiam Castle, Scotney Castle & Bateman’s (home of Rudyard Kipling). Caught the train to Canterbury. Visited Cathedral & had boat trip & returned to Cathedral for Evensong. All highly recommended.

Explored Rye one day and fell in love with everything; buildings stunning, Ypres Tower very interesting, Lamb House.

Recommend Apothecary & Mermaid Inn for food.

Highlight – sitting on the balcony, tea in hand, watching the sun rise over the river. Thank you.

John & Lynn Knights,               Suffolk                                              3.10.14

We have enjoyed a relaxing week with some lovely weather as a respite from all the recent rain and floods. We cycled along Rye Harbour Nature Reserve to Winchelsea Beach, also cycled to Lydd and Appledore (delicious lunch at The Black Lion)/ Another leisurely cycle along the 1066 route to Winchelsea was rather muddy but worth it for the tasty lunch at The New Inn. Not bad for February!

Thanks for the welcoming bubbly. Now off home to celebrate our daughter’s 21st birthday.

Julie & Keith,                            Witham, Essex                  15th-21st February 2014

Another relaxing week – our second visit. Enjoyable lunches at Haydens.

Redshank & curlew on our doorstep.

Heron, Egret & lapwing at Rye Nature Reserve. Thank you Chris for the bottle, a kind thought.

Colin & Marion Harrington,                   Havant, Hants                           12-19 Oct 2013

Fantastic week even with the storm on Sunday & Monday!! No damage done.

Lovely location and apartment and the bubbly was a lovely surprise – thank-you.

The apartment was recommended by friends (Chris & Steve – June 2012), they were not wrong it has been a brilliant ˝ term break. The meal at Hope & Anchor was amazing and very good value – a must do!! Good fun at the auction on Friday and lovely views from the church tower. Herons, curlews on the estuary while we sat in the sun on the deck. Can’t fault it.

Nikke & Derek                         Ampthill Bedfordshire   26 Oct – 2nd Nov 2013

Eighth time here!

Snow lying and bitter winds made us limit our intended walks & birding. Very glad to get back to the warm flat. Had to be content with the local redshanks. Even the ostriches stayed in their shed.

Later in week, good trip to Canterbury; quick & easy via Ashford on train. Still a thoroughly enjoyable week.

John & Olive Mercer                 Sidcup                          8-15 March 2013

Our sixth visit – can’t you tell we love it! Although the weather has been pretty cold at times the flat has been cosy and restful – as always. We have had a lovely time just ‘chilling’. We had our Sunday lunch at the Haven and it was lovely. In six visits we had never been there before! Thanks for the bubbly and the wifi.

Hope to see you, Chris, next time we come.

Judith and Clive Morgan                        Buckfast, Devon,          6th – 13th April 2013

Stayed for Easter weekend – first time on Rye. Beautiful peaceful town. Apartment was perfect – clean, tidy and totally chilled! Ate in Simply Italian – wonderful fresh food!!

The Ship Inn for Easter Sunday lunch also comes highly recommended! Overall a fab stay! Thanks Chris – we hope to return in the summer!

Hannah & Jon                          Essex                           29th March – 1st April 2013

Beautiful location, our fourth visit to Rye but first at the Boathouse and it is perfect.

Rye as wonderful as ever, recommend ‘Simply Italian’ for a lovely meal. Will definitely stay here again.

Liane & Steve                                                                                                   26/5/13

We really liked Rye and how it has retained its unique identity. Recommend George for beer, Ambrette & Webbe’s for food. Ypres, Ship & Mermaid all worth a visit. If you eat outside at the Mermaid, watch out for the predatory gulls, they will take the food off the plate!

Mark & Hilary                                       Dudley                                                 6/7/2013

Last minute decision to escape the hustle & bustle of everyday life – Kerry remembered a lovely w/e she spent at the Boathouse in April so contacted Chris to see if he could help and here we are!

Following a saunter around town we are sitting on the balcony, glass of the bubbly (so thoughtfully discovered in the fridge) in hand watching the ever changing sky as a storm passes over. Refreshed we return to work on Monday but hope to return to the Boathouse in the not too distant future. Thankyou Chris.

Trudi & Kerry                          Cambridge                               27 July 2013

We have really enjoyed our 4 days here, such a welcome escape from work. The apartment had everything we needed and was in a fantastic location. We had lovely meals out at the Thai restaurant, Carey’s and Sunday lunch at the Mermaid. We recommend Rye Hire as we hired bikes and rode out to Winchelsea Beach through the Nature Reserve. Pett Level beach is also great for rock pools. We will certainly be back. Thank you Chris.

Lawrence & Sarah Webster                  West Sussex                             2-5th Aug 2013

A very enjoyable short break, flat clean and comfortable, especially the spacious bed! Relaxed so much watching the river ebb & flow did not see as much of Sussex as planned! The A/M (6am) from balcony saw cormorant on river, oystercatcher on river bank and barn owl circling fields opposite. Marvellous!! SI Italian Restaurant very good.

Hope to make many returns! Many thanks.

Also 2 marsh harriers.

Spittles                                      Deal Kent                                 13th/16th August

We loved it here! Very relaxing and the sleep we had was amazing. We would love to come back here again.

Thank you

Chris and Shelley Martin                                                                        2013 August

2nd visit to this apartment – we love Rye & the wonderful bird life at Rye Harbour & Dungeness Nature Reserve. Even just outside the window here we have seen 50 Little Stint searching the mud for food & Common Sandpiper, Dunlin & Curlew Sandpipers.

Highly recommend the Landgate Bistro and The Gandhi Indian Restaurant.

Colin & Sarah Tucker                            London SE26                           Sept 7 – 14th

We loved Rye and have some great atmospheric photos. Dungeness was equally as spectacular and in stark contrast.

The Boathouse was warm and comfortable and an ideal base.

Sue & Paul Dunn                                   S. Wales                      27 Oct – 3rd Nov 2012

Chilled out in the apartment, watched the birds and the tide changing to and fro. Check out the fresh fish near the roundabout to Camber Sands, we had king prawns, cockles and a dressed crab – wonderful, washed down with Chris’s bubbly (nice touch). Great beer at the George Hotel. Don’t miss a ‘proper’ pub the William the Conqueror at Rye Harbour. ‘VIVA RYE

Paul & Glen                                           Whitstable Kent            30 Nov – 1 Dec 2012

In spite of the weather – have had a very interesting few days. Spent a lot of time in Rye’s many antique shops. Enjoyed Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and the little café over the bridge.

Dungeness was like being on another planet and fascinating but you need to wrap up. Have walked miles. The Boathouse is perfectly situated and nice to come home to. Thanks Chris for the bottle of bubbly, hope to return again.

PS. Loved the village of Winchelsea & the church – not the beach.

Pam & Steve, Cambs                         4/11/11 – 7/11/11

Had a wonderful time – great meal in the Tuscan Kitchen and wonderful night sky (even saw a shooting star!). Fizz was great and flat has been really nice. Looking forward to a good long walk to Winchelsea before heading back to London.

Ben & Becky, London                         18-11-11 – 20-11-11

Had a great few days, weather although cold quite sunny so enjoyed several walks. Boathouse very cosy, thanks for the welcome Bottle of Fizz! Best Bakewell Tart ever at ‘Simon the Pieman’ Café. Great night at Simply Italian, good food & excellent entertainment as we went on ‘Rat Pack’ night. Loved Rye Town with its cobbled streets & wonderful buildings. Saw the light show and learnt all about Rye’s history, amazing model!

Lynne & Tony, Reading Berks             5.12.11 – 9.12.11

Perfect location – an easy walk into the town (no parking worries) and the peace of the waterside. We recommend the Town Model and audio guided walk as a good way to get orientated.  We love the compactness and medieval charm of the town and, having sampled several of the excellent bars & restaurants (the George, the Mermaid, the Hope & Anchor. The Lemongrass & the Fish Café) we found that a couple of good walks to Rye Harbour, the Nature Reserve and Camber helped to remedy the calorific damage!

The flat was unusually clean, warm and comfortable and very thoughtfully equipped with everything we could possibly want. Many thanks, Chris, for all your care and for the welcome tea tray & bottle in the fridge. We really appreciated it.

We shall certainly return to the Boathouse and become two of your many ‘regulars’ – and will enthusiastically recommend it to friends.

Alan & Jane, S. Cambridgeshire             27-31 March 2012

A lovely place to spend Easter weekend. Quiet and peaceful. Easy walks to the Ypres Inn with great live music and lovely landlord.

Ate at Ambrette on Saturday – a fantastic dining experience – gorgeous food and huge attention to details. Not ridiculously expensive either although a bit more than the pub – well worth it but you need to book.

A real highlight was watching the tide turn on the river and the lovely bird life. Winchelsea and Battle both worth a visit.

Thank you for a well-appointed cottage – beautifully clean – and the wine.

Julia & Simon                         6-9 April

A return to Rye after 18 months. Have come regularly in the past so have been revisiting familiar places - Dungeness, Hastings & the Marsh. Weather so  so, not much rain, but a bit dull and cool to start with. Good food at Carey’s, Simply Italian, the Pilot at Dungeness and especially the Black Lion at Appledore, very good food and friendly service. Jerwood Gallery in Hastings worth a visit. Loads of interesting vintage shops in Old Hastings and St Leonards.

Will be back again no doubt.

Sheila & Alan , Perth Scotland             4th – 11th May

Enjoyed train ride to Brighton!

Have joined Chris’s band of returners and hope to be back very soon. The apartment is very comfortable with wonderful views but situated so conveniently to Rye.

Great walks over the nature reserve and along the R. Rother to Camber. Found a wonderful show garden and nursery off A21 – ‘Merriments’ well worth a visit by any keen gardener. Never enough time to see everything and also enjoy the peace! Batteries well and truly recharged!

Chris & Steve, Bedfordshire                         28th – 3rd June

In spite of the ‘English Weather’ we have enjoyed our stay here. The rise and fall of the tide has been interesting to watch – what a range! Can recommend bike hire on Cyprus Street – on the day that the sun came out. We had a great ˝ day exploring the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve.

Thank you Chris (loved your art) and cleaners for the tourist information.

Dianne & Don, Lake Rotoiti/ Rotorua/ New Zealand             9/6/12 to 16/6/12

On crutches (Paul) and so wanted somewhere close to home, but interesting in all weathers. We could sit on the terrace for breakfast and sometimes evening meals. Comfortable and slept very well. Very quiet location.

Good meal at Simply Italian, busy. Good but more expensive meal at Lemon Tree (Thai). Good fresh fish bought from merchant near the bridge out of Rye towards Camber. Just getting ready to leave and a seal came up to say goodbye!!

Paul & Kate, North Kent             23rd – 30th June 2012

Another lovely week here at No.9. – our third visit. We love the tranquillity of the apartment together with the lovely view. The rising & falling of the tide makes the outlook v. interesting. The weather has been glorious.

We hope to be back next year. Many thanks for the bubbly – a smashing welcome. Also appreciated the new TV particularly as we are here for the Olympic opening ceremony.

Jean & Allan, Tonbridge             21st/28th July

What a fabulous week we had – Sunday lunch at Hope & Anchor was beautiful. Marino’s was the best chippy restaurant ever. The Mermaid great for drinks.

We loved Rye Harbour Nature Reserve with bird ‘hides’ and its surreal landscape. Folkestone’s Art Galleries. Canterbury was an interesting afternoon out. Loved being close to nature by the Brede. It was just what we needed. I love your bicycle painting and the nocturnal painting by the door, reminiscent of Van Gogh …

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.

Christine & Mal Tanner                         28th July – 4th August

‘Tea & Fizz’ on arrival was most welcome – thank you!

Lovely Saturday evening meal at The Ship.

Couldn’t get Sunday Lunch anywhere as all fully booked, but had a very friendly pint at The Queens Head instead (this pub even has a library!),

We enjoyed visits to Winchelsea Beach, Bexhill-on-Sea, Hastings and Chichester. Lots of excellent coffee shops in Rye. Favourite meal was at Simply Italian, best chippy award goes to Marino’s and best cake experience was at the Farmers Market.

We’ve had fabulous weather all week, the apartment is perfect and we feel thoroughly rested. Hope to be back next year! Thanks Chris

Matthew & Lisa, Notts.             18th – 25th August 2012

Had a very nice time relaxing especially enjoying the river views. Spotted a seal on our last day which was a nice bonus.

Weather was largely fine & sunny especially on our walk to the nature reserve at Rye Harbour.

Local butchers & greengrocers great for meat & veg & Jempsons/Budgens good for everything else!

Apartment was lovely also, so all in all a great break.

Steve & Virginia, Lancaster             25th August – 1st Sept 2012

We have had a lovely stay, the weather has been fantastic hot sun every day, apartment super & such a good location.

We have had some lovely meals at the Standard, the Hope & Anchor really good, Marino’s the best for fish & chips & sat on the balcony to eat them watching the tide go in & out.

Loved the nature reserve & walk to Winchelsea & also thank you for the bubbly, we will be back.

We have had some great trips on railways, seen castles, Dungeness, all been fantastic, what a super week also loved your paintings Chris

Carol & Barry                         1st – 8th Sept. 2012

Saw a baby seal last week in Rye Harbour! Weather great for September. Location of apartment ideal, short walk to Rye town. Had a great meal at Simply Italian to celebrate our 35th Wedding Anniversary.

Standard is a great pub, good atmosphere and reasonable food.

Carey’s great for seafood and superb fish & chips from Marino’s.

The Ship is also a good eatery. Visited 6 good NT places in the area. Bateman’s (home of Rudyard Kipling) worth a visit.

Lynn & Mike, Sheffield             8-22 Sept 2012
